I used to watch ‘Commando’ every time it would come on T.V. when I was young. If you want a definition of a cliché action film, this is it. It’s got action, fights, military war hero protagonist, explosions, badass one liners and buff iron men.
In the given time of history of 80s action cinema, people were endowed with the ‘boom’ and ‘bang’ of theater amusement. It was also very, “All yeah, America!” which was the sentiment of that time in history.
Main characters in this genre play ‘the outcasts’ coming from the military and being very dangerous. The main character is given the portrayal of the underdog. Who doesn’t see themselves as an underdog?
Plot
Bad guy does something, the good guy gets pulled into it, kicks the bad guy’s ass and the good guy wins. Simple formula. The ending in this genre is mostly pretty good, whether it may be ‘finally settling down” or “off into a sun set.”
It is rare that we get an ending where the villain wins because that’s just not how the genre works, nobody wants to pay to see the bad guy win and everybody dies. Unless it’s done right and by that I mean not make the villain as evil.
The Villain
Past and present villains are pretty much the same, it just went from ‘Soviets’ and terrorists to “gangs” and still terrorists but with monsters. The purpose of the villain is to be the driving force as to why they need to have their asses kicked for our entertainment.
It’s always something like ‘we need to kill him, for some reason he woke up wanting to blow up a hospital and us– the good guys– can’t let that happen.’
I think the pure evil villains are pretty funny., Tthey just said fuck it people suck and they must die. They always have this message to ‘stick it to the man’ ‘the man has got us down’ ‘the man tricked us for his own gain.’
At times we can sympathize with the villain, whether it might be from desperation to him being betrayed by those he tried to appease. Then the hero kills him and says, “Don’t care lol,” saves the day. These moments where the hero comes off like a dick are from writers that don’t have any emotional understanding or someone thought it would be funny to do.
The Hero
Heroes in action films are to be the most likable and coolest people that you can think of. He was the best of the best. Somehow he has to be very skilled and have past that he wants to forget. All has been the same over the years with some tweaks to make it more modern to the genre.
An A-list actor always ends up as the driving force of the film as it always is and they make him say the one liners. In ‘Commando’ John Matrix (What a name) drops a bad guy off a cliff, he gets back to his car and the woman in the car asks, “Did you kill him?” And he says,”I let him go.” Cold.
They also have to be bulk, built and buff since they are trained professionals to kill. Can’t let dem gains go to waste.
Today it’s about the same but closer to home, and for some reason they all look the same. By that I mean the way it is shot, it looks as if it was not edited by high budget editors. I think that’s how many people feel about some action films, it’s as if we have been given a “safe-bet” film.
Give it some grain, make me not say, “Oh this looks like that other movie.” Sure, action movies are very cookie-cutter and a safe bet for them to be made by studio companies. They can also be artistic and potentially make a change with it.
Because of this, we are now stuck to the “standard” of what studios have set. The genre always changes with time as everything does so, hopefully it doesn’t stick.

Arnold’s films are getting a reappraisal with the release of his Netflix documentary. The last time I tried watching COMMANDO I couldn’t get over the scrolling video game logic of him hiding behind rosebushes to avoid machine gun fire. Ducking under hedges doesn’t work like that.
